What are the CMDB Asset Class for

What asset class would you put the following items in and why?

  • certs
  • domain names
  • vendors

certs and domain names I’m thinking of creating a class called Digital Assets (this is what ITIL v 4 recommends, but not sure where to put vendors (like vendors who send us data files and made their way into the CMDB via Change requests).

Do you have an asset class called Vendor Assets?

Excellent question!

Certs & Domain Names are at least as valuable as any given Software License, so it makes significant sense to track these as assets. You can pay attention to the value certainly, but more importantly the use and scheduled expiration of the contracts for the certs & domain names. ServiceNow already has classes in their CMDB for those, so you shouldn’t need to add anything custom. I don’t have all the other major tools memorized, but be sure that you’re checking any other relevant licensing requirements on the tool for custom tables before you add that.

Over to Vendors - I would suggest that Vendors should just be shown as the actual owner on the existing asset record. Something like Managed by would still be used to track which department or user is responsible for the equipment day to day. This assumes a lease or otherwise managed approach to those assets via some kind of support or lease contract.

Lastly - I would actually consider Vendor data files themselves as a Service you are consuming, and not necessarily an asset itself. There might be some nuance I’m not getting from your original post - so if you do have more details there, I’m happy to consider it more and provide you some additional suggestions.

Best of luck!
